Chemical Peels
Chemical peels and the skin on your face go together like peanut butter and jelly. No matter how light or strong a chemical peel is, it’s like the magic wand to get smooth, glowy skin that looks perfectly filtered. But, unfortunately, over the years, chemical peels have gotten a bad rap (thanks, Sex and the City!). The right chemical peel can be a game changer for the skin’s tone and texture, reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, unsightly discoloration, and those hard-to-get-rid-of fine lines and wrinkles.
Although the idea of applying acid to the skin may sound scary, it’s nothing to be intimated by. Plenty of people who have undergone a professional chemical peel call it one of the best treatments for addressing an array of skin concerns—and preventing them, too. In a single session, your biggest skin concerns, including acne and its scars, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture, are lifted away by speeding up skin cell turnover. All that’s left behind is brighter, younger-looking skin. So, if you’re considering adding chemical peels to your beauty to-do list, here’s everything you’ll want to know before getting one.

What Are The Benefits of A Chemical Peel?
The benefits of a chemical peel are seemingly endless, making them a favorite skin rejuvenating treatment. The most significant advantage is that the treatment speeds up and supports cell turnover, which slows as we age.
By accelerating the skin’s ability to exfoliate, dead skin cells are shed, and, in their place, new, fresh skin emerges. This also reduces the appearance of photodamage for healthier, more radiant skin.
Other popular benefits of a chemical peel include:
Reducing hyperpigmentation & sun spots for less dullness
Evening out skin tone
Smoothing out the look of fine lines and wrinkles
Adding glow and luster to skin
Stimulating new collagen production
Unclogging the pores
Improving acne-prone skin and reducing the incidence of breakouts
Smooth skin texture
Brighter, refreshed-looking skin
What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment that relies on an acid, or a combination of them, to exfoliate and resurface the skin. Chemical peels speed up the rate at which the skin sheds (every 28 days or so) to reveal the fresh new skin cells underneath. With age and skin damage, the speed at which the skin naturally exfoliates begins to slow down, giving way to skin that appears dull, dry and clogged with dead skin cells. But with fewer dead skin cells on the surface, the skin appears healthier, smoother, brighter, and more radiant. Since the treatment exfoliates the skin, it also helps improve the skin’s texture, correct discoloration, and reduce the appearance of blemishes.
Several different types of peels are available, and each one works differently. Some chemical peels work superficially and only treat the outermost layer of skin, while others penetrate deeper into the skin. When applied to the skin, chemical exfoliation occurs to target the outer layers of the skin to eliminate dead skin cells by creating a controlled trauma to stimulate the skin’s natural rate of exfoliation. Not all chemical peels exfoliate at the same rate or depth, so while you may see extreme shedding from one type of peel, another may cause mild peeling or none at all. That’s because each chemical peel contains different acids at varying concentrations delivered to the skin at differing depths
Some of the more commonly used acids in chemical peels include alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), and trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
AHAs treat the common yet mild signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and uneven texture.
BHAs help to improve problematic skin and their concerns, such as blemishes, large pores, and uneven texture.
TCA is often used to treat more advanced visible signs of aging and discoloration caused by sun damage, acne, or hormones.
The different depths of peels also vary from light to deep, contributing to how deep a peel works and how much it will exfoliate the skin.
Light chemical peels: Light chemical peels, or superficial peels, rely on the most mild peeling agents to exfoliate the skin gently. These types of peels only affect the top layer of the skin. Light chemical peels use alpha hydroxy acid peels to help minimize the appearance of fine lines, dry skin, minor acne, and mild pigment or uneven skin tone. Beta hydroxy acid peels also fall into the category of light chemical peels to help control oil production, making them good options for oily or acne-prone skin. Other acids used in a light chemical peel include Jessner’s peels.
Medium peels: Deeper than a light peel but not as strong as the deepest peel available, medium peels vary in their solution, but most use trichloroacetic acid or TCA. TCA peels can vary in strength and are sometimes combined with other exfoliating acids. Medium-strength TCA peels work well for skin with pigment irregularities, sun damage, deeper wrinkles, and acne scars.
Deep peels: The strongest option available and only performed under anesthesia (usually with a facelift), deep peels penetrate the deepest dermis layers to rejuvenate the skin. Deep chemical peels require a lengthy downtime, but they provide dramatic results. The primary peeling agent in deep chemical peels is phenol, which can only be done once in a lifetime.
The Treatment Areas
The nice thing about chemical peels is that they work for the skin anywhere on the face, neck, chest, and body. While most chemical peels are performed on the face, there’s no reason why they can’t be used on other areas of the body where skin issues are a concern.

FAQs
While one chemical peel will help improve your skin, a series of treatments is best since it helps build on the results. Mild peels can be done once a month until your optimal results are reached. Deeper peels need more downtime between treatments, so annual or bi-annual appointments are best.
It’s important to baby your skin after a chemical peel since it’s very vulnerable to sun damage. Wearing sunscreen daily post-peel is critical since the skin is always more sensitive and could easily burn from sun exposure. It’s also important to use gentle skin products after a chemical peel and avoid any exfoliating ingredient for at least one week. Even if the skin is flaky, it’s best not to scrub or pick it off and let the skin shed naturally. Picking at the skin can disrupt its healing process and ultimately prolong it or even cause scarring.
The downtime associated with a chemical peel is determined by the type of peel you get. Lighter peels have minimal downtime, if any, and just some mild pinkness or redness and light flaking. After a medium or deep peel, you will have downtime. A medium peel results in more skin shedding, lasting seven to 10 days, while a deep chemical peel requires recuperation at home for 2 to 3 weeks.
As the skin begins to heal, you will see results. You’ll need to be patient, let the peel work its magic on your skin, and not rush the process. Lighter peels show improvement in about one week, while medium peels can take a few weeks to surface.
Like other skin care treatments, the result of a chemical peel is not permanent, which is why they must be performed regularly. The skin will continue to age even if you get chemical peels, but the treatment can help mitigate signs of aging for longer, resulting in healthier-looking skin.
Each peel varies a little depending on the type of chemical peel used. The skin is first prepped and cleaned to ensure no oils are left on the skin. Then, the peeling agent is applied to the skin and remains there for a few minutes. Most people feel a mild stinging or burning, which is temporary and usually subsides after a few minutes. Some peels are designed to self-neutralize and may remain on your skin for 2-4 hours, while others are neutralized as the final step in the treatment.
