What are the Benefits of IPL Photo Facials?
IPL Photo Facials are light-based treatments that focus on improving discoloration in the skin. Some of the benefits of IPL include the following:
A reduction in sunspots & pigmentation
Less redness in the skin
Fewer symptoms of rosacea on the skin
Less noticeable broken capillaries
More even skin tone & texture
A reduction of unwanted facial hair
Diminished appearance of dark spots
Since IPL Photo Facials don’t come with significant downtime because they don’t compromise the outer layer of the skin like some types of lasers do, they work well for a wide variety of lifestyles, too. You can get an IPL Photo Facial and return to your normal activities and schedule immediately, making the treatment a win-win.
Since IPL uses light to target darker skin discoloration, the treatment bears the most benefit in lighter skin tones with predictable pigmented areas. That’s not to say that darker skin tones can’t undergo the procedure because they can, but it needs to be done more carefully to prevent unwanted hyperpigmentation and side effects.
What is an IPL Photo Facial?
IPL Photo Facials are not technically laser treatments, although they are often grouped as one. Rather than using heat, like a laser, IPLs rely on multiple wavelengths of high-intensity light to better the skin. The light beam is absorbed by pigmented cells in the skin, which is then converted into heat to break up pigment in the skin to improve its tone and texture.
Because IPL Photo Facials don’t utilize heat, the treatment improves the skin’s texture and tone in nearly all skin colors and types. Whereas lasers can compromise the outermost layer of skin to penetrate the dermis, IPL Photo Facials bypass the skin’s surface so there’s no damage to the epidermis, which results in far fewer side effects and next to no downtime or recovery.
Since IPL machines have several different targets, including the skin itself, blood vessels, pigment, and hair follicles, the treatment can improve several skin issues. Some of the more popular treatment options for IPL Photo Facials include improving facial lines and wrinkles, vascular lesions, such as rosacea, broken capillaries, port wine stains, brown spots, acne, and even removing unwanted dark hair.
Several different IPL Photo Facial devices are available. At MD Aesthetics, we use the InMode Lumecca handpiece, which is optimized to treat facial pigmentation, superficial vessels, skin texture, and photodamage.
Besides the visible skin improvements that IPL Photo Facials offer, patients love the treatment because it works on all skin types to improve skin-related tone and texture issues.

The Treatment Areas
IPL Photo Facials are usually reserved for the face. You can treat the entire face or just the areas with redness and pigmentation. Some of the more popular treatments for IPL Photo Facials include:
- The Face
- The Neck
- The Upper Lip
- The Chin Area
- The Cheeks
- The Hands
- The Chest
- The Legs
An IPL Photo Facial typically takes between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the treated area. Usually, one session will not provide enough effect to fully address the concerns, so a series of treatments are often recommended. Most patients benefit from two to five treatment sessions, if not more, spaced six weeks apart.
How Much Does an IPL Photo Facial Cost?
We recommend a consultation with a member of our aesthetic team to help you best determine the cost of your IPL Photo Facial treatment. Our team can discuss the treatment details to obtain your desired results.
We tailor IPL Photo Facials to your needs so that the cost will vary from patient to patient. We can also create a custom package exclusive to your needs and a more exact price for the treatment. Keep in mind that the number of sessions needed and the size and location of the treatment area are factors in the overall cost.
FAQs
Every patient is different and has different skin concerns, but on average, the benefits of the treatment are obtained with two to five treatments. IPL laser facials should be spaced about six weeks apart so the skin can take advantage of the treatment and allow unwanted pigment to be eradicated appropriately. Then, after the entire course of treatment is complete, you may be recommended maintenance treatments to keep the skin looking fresh.
There’s no downtime or recovery period with IPL treatments, but you’ll need to follow specific skin to help your skin heal.
Immediately after an IPL treatment, the skin may be flushed and pink, almost how it looks after a mild sunburn, which will subside in the coming hours. The skin may also feel dry, tender, raw, or almost like sandpaper, which is normal. It’s important to keep the skin well-hydrated with a basic moisturizer and protected from the sun as it heals. The treated areas will turn brown and look like little spots, and the skin will likely feel rough as the discoloration comes to the surface. Rather than picking, scratching, or trying to exfoliate off the skin, it’s best to let the skin heal and allow the treated areas to shed themselves. Accelerating the shedding part of the treatment can cause the skin to scar and compromise the results.
There’s not much to do to prep your skin for the treatment, but you’ll need to avoid a few things. The skin should be treated in its natural state and color, so that means no tanning before getting an IPL (the same goes for applying self-tanner). It’s also best to stop using retinols or retinoids for a week before your IPL Photo Facial so the skin is less irritated and compromised and better equipped to rebound.
On the day of your appointment, come with clean, bare skin free of any moisturizers or facial oils, and avoid wearing fragrances or fragranced skincare or body products that can potentially interact with the IPL device.
IPL Photo Facials are always safer for lighter skin types, but it is possible to treat darker skin tones as long the proper precautions are taken. Since IPL treatments target melanin, the provider must understand the appropriate way to perform the treatment to avoid any complications, especially since pigment issues, like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, scars, and blisters, have the potential to arise in darker skin tones.
Since the skin may be sensitive following an IPL Photo Facial, it’s best to stick to a bland and gentle skincare routine for about one week. Cleanse the skin with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, and avoid any skincare products with benzoyl peroxide, retinol, glycolic acids, or other exfoliating acids or exfoliators in general. Apply a light moisturizer to the skin and wear an SPF of at least 30 daily.
